You’re happy with doing remote work, but you’re not so happy with your remote workspace. Your home doesn’t have a spare room that you can turn into an office. You’ve had to shove a desk and a computer into an already crowded room, like your living room or your home gym. It’s not the ideal setup.

The good news is that you have plenty of room in your yard to create a remote workspace. It’s the perfect spot to build yourself a shipping container office. You’ll have a spacious, quiet spot to tackle your tasks, and you won’t have to commute very far to get to it.

How can you build a shipping container office? Learn the basic steps here.

Prepare the Ground

The first step to building a shipping container office is to prepare the ground that you’re going to build on. You will want to grade the portion of the yard so that it’s smooth and level. Then, you will want to pour in a concrete foundation. The foundation will add stability to your container office, and it will protect the floor from groundwater intrusion.

Buy the Container

Once the foundation is ready, you can start shopping for your container. Where can you get one? You can find a 20ft shipping container for sale on this online shipping container portal. Make sure your order is for a “one-trip” grade container — this type of container is new. It will have minimal signs of damage, which will make your construction process easier.

Once you’ve found the container, you can make your order. On the delivery day, you should do a quick inspection to guarantee that it’s up to your standards. If you’re happy with the purchase, it will be off-loaded onto the foundation.

Make Openings

While your shipping container already comes with a large set of doors, you won’t want to use those as your main entrance. You should have a professional contractor cut openings for a separate entrance door for you to quickly get in and out of your office.

You should also add openings for windows and skylights. Letting in the sunshine will make your office feel bigger, warmer and more welcoming. Plus, some of the benefits of natural sunlight will make you a better employee! It will boost your mood on slow Monday mornings and give you the energy to push through your to-do list.

Get Connected

Once a contractor has framed the container’s interior walls, you will need to add electrical wiring. A professional electrician will have to connect your office to your home’s electrical grid. You will need access to this grid to set up essential features like internet, lighting and heating.

Add Insulation

After the electrical wiring is done, you will want to add insulation. Insulation will keep you comfortable inside your office throughout the entire year. It will also protect any expensive tech that you’re planning on storing inside of your office. Electronic devices like laptops do not function in extreme cold or heat.

Paint the Walls

Once the insulation is added, contractors can put up the drywall, install the flooring and paint the walls. Choose colors that increase productivity and spark creativity, like yellow or green.

Then, you’re ready to move into your office! Set up your desk, pull out your ergonomic chair and get to work!
