While HVAC cleaning is most likely the last item on your cleaning list, it still needs to be done every three to five years. When you let your air ducts and vents get dirty, and stay dirty, it ends up hurting your home and health in the long run.

Don’t let dust bunnies, dead-skin cells, and old pet hair sit in your walls, get them out!

Keep reading to learn how cleaning HVAC vents and ducts will help you live a cleaner life today.

The Importance of HVAC Cleaning

As with most things in life, it’s always more cost-effective to maintain your ducts and vents than it is to replace them. Not only is maintaining your ducts and vents going to save you money, but it also saves energy. By not having to work as hard to push air through dirty vents, the free-flowing air reaches its destination faster, more efficiently, and cleaner.

When you don’t clean your air vents regularly, you’re allowing dirty air to be recycled through your home, then breathing it in. The best way to have clean air is by cleaning what your air goes through, it’s why you replace your air filter every three months! While you don’t need HVAC vent cleaning that often, it still needs to be done.

How to Clean HVAC Vents and Ducts

Your first step is removing the screws from the air duct covers and return-air plates. Then you’ll cover your supply vents with paper towels, the vent should hold it in place for you. Next, you’ll turn your fan on at the thermostat, this helps push the dirt you loosen along the way for you.

Now that you’re ready it’s time to knock loose and dust in your ducts by taking a brush and tapping any accessible ductwork in your basement. After that, you’ll have to clean the supply registers by sweeping the dust in your register. Keep your vacuum running and open a vent and start vacuuming them.

Once you’ve done all of your vents you can use a damp, microfiber cloth to reach down and wipe them out. Put everything back and you’re all set!
