The average house weighs around 80,000 pounds to 160,000 pounds. The weight of the house depends on the square meter, the contents of the house and the building materials used in the house. The calculation used to determine the weight is 200 pounds for every square foot and 2,000 feet.

Per square foot

The calculation of how much does the house weighs depend on your knowledge of per square foot area

Standard Rule- A general rule of thumb for the weight of an average house is 200 pounds per square foot for a one-story house. This is the weight that the construction industry uses as a standard.

Correct Measurements- There are several different ways to determine the weight of a house. Measuring the size of your home in square foot is required. If you don’t already know, you need to take some measurements.

Simple House- If you have a basic simple house with a rectangular layout, you can measure the length and width. Multiply these two. For example, if your house is 60 feet by 40 feet, the total area is 2,400.

Big Lavish house- If the house is big, you can measure your home by room wise measurements which include hallways and those small spaces that you don’t consider rooms. Determine the width and length of each room with a tape measure. Then determine the square meters of each room by multiplying the width by the length and you add all the square meters together, you have the square meters of your house.

Finding out the weight

If you have the square footage of your house, you can determine how much it weighs. Knowing how much your house weighs can help you when adding or renovating. Plus, the weight will tell you which materials work best.

Determining the weight of your house is to use a simple rule of thumb that a one-story house weighs an average of 200 pounds per square foot. 2-storey and 3- storey houses will be around 275 pounds to 350 pounds respectively.

These figures do not include the basement or the concrete garage. However, this includes the weight of the foundation. A typical foundation weighs between 160,000 and 200,000 pounds.

Another method determines the weight of the house by weighing all the components of the house, including common building materials. This includes the floors, walls and ceiling. The individual components used in the house vary depending on when the house was built. The older the house, the stronger and heavier the components.

Weight of various houses

Weight of various houses

How much does a house weighs depends upon the size of your house.

Less than 1,000 square feet

A house less than 1,000 square feet is considered a small layout. The average weight of this size of house is about 50,000-100,000 pounds. There are also cottages. It’s hard to tell how much a tiny house weighs because they come in different sizes and not all have the most common building materials.

  • Generally small layout houses are less than 600 square feet. However, the average size of a small home is about 225 square meters. Therefore the maximum size for a tiny home is 40 feet long, 13.5 feet high and 8.5 feet wide. It is significantly smaller than a normal home.
  • Dry weight refers to the weight of the house itself without personal belongings or other items in the house. The dry weight of a small house is usually around 10,000 pounds. However, a tiny house weighs as little as 3,000 pounds or as much as 10,000 pounds

3 bedroom house

All areas of all the rooms are considered and measured to calculate your three bedroom house.

If you have three bedrooms, a kitchen, two bathrooms, a dining room and a living room, that’s eight rooms. Number of rooms needs to be multiplied by 1000 pounds. For example, if you have eight rooms multiplied by 1,000 that is 8,000 pounds.

It is simply the weight of the rooms in your house. This does not take into account the foundation, walls, floor, garage and roof and does not consider material or personal property.

But when you include concrete floor slabs, interior walls and concrete foundations, roofing shingles then you should expect the total weight of the house to be between 80,000 and 160,000 pounds.

2-Storey House

The average two-storey house is 275 pounds per square foot. Remember that this is an average weight per square meter. To determine the actual weight, you need to know the square footage of your home. That is why it is important to know how to calculate the weight of your house. The component varies depending on the age of your home.

The floorboards are used as floor covering in older houses, while plywood is used in more modern houses.

  • Hardwood plywood is heavier, weighing approximately 67 pounds per 4×8-foot board.
  • One sheet of hardwood plywood is three pounds per square foot per inch of thickness.
  • Softer plywood weighs 61 pounds for a 4×8-foot board. Soft plywood weighs less than two pounds per square foot for every inch of thickness.

Roofs are another big weight factor. A stone roof is made of slate, concrete or clay. They are natural materials, but also heavier than other roofing materials. There are synthetic tile roofs that are lighter.

  • Concrete roof tiles cost on average around 650 pounds per square foot. But they can weigh up to 1,000 pounds per square foot. Aluminum and steel roof tiles are a lighter option.
  • Metal roofing panels, which are 26-gauge metal, weigh about one pound per square foot. A 29-gauge metal plate is lighter than that. So that’s a little over half a pound per square foot.

When it comes to weight, the contents of your home also matter. There is a standard for measuring the weight of all your content.

Take into consideration everything in a two storey house building covering an area of 2,000 square foot then the total weight would be anywhere from 160,000 to 320,000 pounds.

Brick house

With a brick house, all other dimensions related to the weight of the house come into play, except now you have to consider the weight of the brick.

Different types and styles of brick are commonly available are red brick which is rectangular and average 2.25 inches high, 7.75 inches long and 3.5 inches deep and has a lot of clay in it, which turns red under the influence of heat.

An average red brick weighs about 2.5 pounds. A typical pallet holds approximately 500 bricks and weighs 2,250 pounds.

Why to know about your house weight

house weight

If you know how much a house weigh then you can easily undertake repairs and renovation work required, especially at the foundation of your house.

The total weight of the 400,000 pound house is over 200 tons. After all these calculations, why would anyone care to know about the weight of their house? If it’s not because you’re physically moving your house, it could be because you need to fix your foundation.

Conclusion

The average house weight is between 80,000 and 160,000 pounds. It depends on the square meter size of the house, infrastructure material and internal content

A typical house weighs an average of 120,000 pounds, but that depends on size and materials. Whether it is a small or a large house, knowing the weight of the home can be a valuable aid in planning the entire construction and provides you a better understanding of soil weight beneath the foundation and reduce the risk of an overly heavy home having a negative impact on your yard.
