You must have heard a lot about storage units and their efficacy. However, they are not as much versatile as you think. You can store certain kinds of material in there, and some can cause havoc to the rest!

Here we will help you store your stuff properly in a storage unit. Objects that can also damage other things are given in detail and alternatives to keep these things safe.

1. VALUABLES:

Storage units are no doubt very safe, and no one can touch any of your belongings by law. The security systems are exceptional; however, you will not want to risk pushing your luck and losing your valuables. However, it is always wise that you do not attempt any of your valuable things. This rule is quite simple. You can save things having high value for you. The cost always differs from a person’s life experience. For example, you may not want to lose your first toy or your deceased grandma’s shirt.

Remember, never place any jewelry item with other belongings in a self storage unit because it might get mishandled. Moreover, your valuable items can lose or damage during the transfer. So, take your responsibility and be very careful with your belongings you want to keep forever. The best option is to use a hand carry bag to keep them with you all the time.

2. DAMP ITEMS:

Many of us overlook this point. Even general instructions paper of placing goods in the storage unit does not say anything about it. However, it can cause massive damage when you place wet items having strong scents in any area harboring other products. These items include oils, lotions, soaps, healthy spices, perfumes, and candles. Keep the things that can attain moistures above the flour and wrapped in some absorbent papers.  Add moisture-absorbing packets throughout your storage items and, most specifically, in the corners. Always dry off any fluid, water, or mud if fallen on any of the objects. Discard that cloth or paper immediately. Never throw it in the same area.

3. PERISHABLES

The entire foodstuff that can deteriorate or expire in 2-3 days, it is perishable. Not all kinds of meat (excluding dry meat), vegetables, fruits, dairy products, etc. can stay preserved in the storage unit. You cannot even use short-term coolers to keep them or get ready to ruin your whole lot. You cannot even place drugs in there. For non-perishable foods, e.g., dried fruits, meat, and other packed and well-preserved items, you can keep in an airtight container. Always store every kind of food item alone, e.g., never place rice with other grains or pet food with other food items, etc. Always check the expiration dates before placing canned items in storage units.

4.  PETS:

That sounds crazy, right! How can one keep some living beings in one’s storage unit? However, many cases report of placing birds, fish, and rabbits in storage units. It is a complete violation of the public storage area contract and against humanity and law. Never put your pet in a storage unit. If you cannot keep it with you, you can contact some organization or a friend to take care of him for a short time. It is far better than leaving the poor creature alone in darkness and isolation without any proper care. Just think of yourself placed in a dark, cold room in a cage. You will die of loneliness, right. Miserable it is! Only invest a few dollars and hire a pet sitter, if you care for your little friend a bit.

5. WINE:

Theoretically, and by law, you can store any wine in the storage unit. However, you are going to ruin its flavor and quality if you do so. Even in climate-controlled self-storage units, the temperature is not good enough to keep your vino suitable for a long time. Look for a vine storage vault instead of keeping your liquor safe in high quality. Moreover, the best we can suggest is to drink it right away and have a party with friends before moving to your next place.

6. HAZARDOUS MATERIALS:

Hazardous materials are items of critical care. All the storage units forbid their placing in the rental area. By default, you can’t place anything that can be potentially damaging if opened or spilled by mistake. All the acids, powerful cleaners, firecrackers, matchboxes come under this category. Moreover, the innocuous aerosol cans can cause a massive explosion if they come under direct heat. Also, any fuel or yard equipment can cause severe damage. These materials can not only damage the rest of things but also can cause substantial health hazards. Moreover, there is a big no to firearms, explosives, and ammunition.

CONCLUSION

Storage units are among the best choices to store products for a short time. However, many questions come to your mind when you think of renting a storage unit for yourself. We have suggested five items you should never try to place in the storage unit. Go for the suggested alternatives if you want to store and keep the things mentioned above before moving to your next house.
