Leaky faucets and pipes

Apartment rentals and residential houses often face the struggle of leaky pipes and faucets. Furthermore, it is a nuisance and a waste of money. Immediately fixing leaks is the best cost-saving measure on the water utility bill. Moreover, a profusely leaking faucet can accumulate over a thousand gallons of water annually or over a hundred showers. The good news is that leaky pipes and faucets are usually easy to spot, and areas that should be addressed immediately are those infested with molds. Mold infestation can be hazardous and expensive if not treated right away, but thankfully, they can be resolved through quick mold removal.

5 Inexpensive DIY Home Improvement Jobs That Can Boost Your Property Value

March 20, 2023
  • Causes: Leaky faucets usually occur when the tap seal gets damaged through tearing, dislodging, and stiffening. Due to this, the washer is no longer tightly wound, leading to water drippings. Wear and tear can also contribute to valve corrosion and lead to water pooling. Pipe leaks, on the other hand, are from deterioration, water shifting, and further damage.
  • Fixes: Washer replacement can be a DIY job. However, it requires special tools and plumber expertise. In addition, wear and tear will occur over time. To slow down deterioration, regularly use the faucet and avoid excessive pressure on the handles. Moreover, regular plumbing inspection is the best prevention.

Low water pressure

Low water pressure makes simple activities difficult like rinsing, showering, cooking, etc. It happens to both new and old houses.

  • Causes: Significant reduction in water pressure is brought about by the main water break, a leaking pipe within your home, and sediment buildup in pipes, aerators, faucets, and showerheads.
  • Fixes: A quick fix for low water pressure is to identify leaks by the elimination process. Shut off all taps and check the water meter. If it continues to move, then there is most likely a leak. On the other hand, the mineral buildup can be remedied by cleaning and soaking in vinegar. Altogether avoid sedimentation by installing a water filtration system. For low water pressure, regular pipe maintenance is the best way to prevent this.

Clogged drains and toilets

Clogged drains and toilets are characterized by water backing up instead of draining seamlessly.

  • Causes: Clogged and slow drains occur when a physical blockage or non-soluble waste enters the drain and blocks the pipe.
  • Fixes: Simple blockage can be addressed by a plunger to loosen clogs through air pressure. Otherwise, chemical drain cleaners are used to remove blockage a plunger is unable to dislodge.

Water heater concerns

Water heating element issues are usually characterized by dripping water, cold and discolored water, and noise from the device. Water heater concerns require professional help from a plumber.

  • Causes: Device leaks are the primary cause of water heater device issues. Leaks are usually from mineral buildup, which reduces the efficiency of the heater and its water supply.
  • Fixes: Troubleshoot the device by checking on the pilot light and the temperature setting. If the problem is due to sediment buildup, drain the water tank and flush it out.

Running toilet

A running toilet is a nuisance and an annoyance. The water closet is still functioning. However, it constantly flushes, runs, wastes water, and rumbles.

  • Causes: Typically, this occurs when the inner functionality of the toilet is no longer working correctly. The structural integrity of the flapper valve is already compromised, unable to hold water in.
  • Fixes: Check each component, such as the float, flexible and overflow tubes, and the tank. Make sure that each spare part is performing its specific function. DIY toilet repair kits usually fit standard models.

Wrap-up

As the home ages, poor plumbing and wear and tear are the natural courses. The most common problems are clogged drains, leaky pipes and faucets, heating and pressure concerns, and running toilets. DIY remedies may address some, but most will require technical expertise. Ultimately, the most proactive ways of addressing plumbing issues are awareness and regular check-ups and maintenance.
