Finding the Right Roofer

When you need roof repairs you have no shortage of roofers to choose from ass the home improvement industry is one of the most competitive consumer markets. You should always talk to multiple roofers to ensure you hire a company that provides the work and services you’re looking for. One of the most important steps in finding the right roofer for the job is getting a roofing quote. A roofing quote can tell you a great deal about a roofing company, its methods, approach to work, and how reputable they are. Some of the questions you ask not only include cost but also cover proper business standards and customer care.

Questions to Ask a Roofer When Getting a Quote

  • About Proper Insurance: an important part of hiring a reputable roofer is verifying they have the right insurance. The roofing company you hire should have both workman’s compensationand liability insurance. Workman’s compensation covers any potential accidents or injuries for workers who are doing the roofing job and liability insurance covers any damage to your or any other nearby property.
  • Verify Proper Licensing: any reputable roofing company is going to have proper licensing to do work in your state. Also, when verifying a roofing company’s information they should have a phone number, work email, and a street address for their business. If the only address a roofing company provides is a PO Box you should consider that a possible red flag.
  • The Timeframe For a Written Quote: a roofer should always provide a written quote before begging any work as this establishes the groundwork of the job for both you and the roofer. This also ensures that expenses are understood and what the overall repair or upgrade process will involve. While a job can change depending on any unforeseen issues a written quote still provides an overall blueprint for the job itself.
  • A Breakdown of the Costs: in addition to getting a quote the quote should be broken down into subheadings expelling what the expenses are paying for. While the total costs may be well within your budget you still want to know how this breaks down for new materials, debris removal, labor, and other expenses.
  • Payment Setup: how you pay for the job can vary, and you should ask how this is handled in advance. In some cases, you may need to make a down payment upfront and in others, monthly payments can be discussed. Also, as many roofing jobs are partly covered by your homeowner’s insurance you’ll want to ask about that part of the process and how the roofing company will communicate with your insurance provider.
  • Warranty: the majority of roofers provide some type of warranty on the work they do however, not all warranties are the same and the details certainly matter. You’ll want to know how long the roofer will cover the work they did and what specific type of repairs the warranty will cover. Do note that the parts used during the roofing project, such as the shingles, tend to be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, and you should ask for that information as well.
  • Point of Contact: your roofer should have a clearly established point of contact for any questions you may have about the job. This should include an on-site contact (as the owner of the roofing company may not be there all the time) and also an office contact for more general questions.

Final Thoughts

When you need a quote for your roof repair you shouldn’t rush the process while you do want to get your roof fixed as soon as possible you’ll also want to make sure the job is done right. By being thorough and asking the right questions you’ll ensure the roofer you hire will provide the level of work and care you expect. The extra effort is well worth it as you want the job done right the first time.
