Nothing feels as incredible as a good night’s sleep. So follow these tips and don’t let sleep escape you.

Kickstart Your Day with Water

Dehydration is one of the chief indicators of morning fatigue and it may cause mood fluctuations later in the day as well. Because when you are dehydrated, your brain, which consists of 70% water, operates on less fuel.

So before you brew coffee, you will want to drink at least two glasses of water right after waking up. This will replenish the fluids lost throughout the night and boost your mental alertness. Equally important, you will need to drink water throughout the day because hydration plays a vital role in how well your brain functions.

Your cup of joe may give you a quick energy boost, but you may also experience a caffeine crash around five hours afterward. A caffeine crash often causes a steep drop in your energy levels, making you feel more exhausted than before.

Perform Quick Exercises 

Exercising while feeling groggy may not sound appealingly practical at all. But as soon as you overcome your inner sloth, you will find out what you have been missing this whole time!

Exercises need not to be intense. Brisk walking, dancing to music, or even chasing your dog around can help get the heart and breathing rate up to wake your body quickly. Long deep breaths and other simple breathing exercises can also raise oxygen within the circulation.

Embrace the Cold

Stepping into a cold shower will wake you up faster than drinking hot coffee. It is no secret that cold water gives you an adrenaline rush, but many people tend to have overlooked this hack. Do you think it is just too good to be true?

Immersion in cold water dilates the blood vessels in deep tissues, thereby increasing blood flow, circulation, and heart rate. All of these lead to a higher demand for oxygen and thus, it stimulates your body to wake up and breathe deeper.

If you refuse to take a cold shower early in the morning, you can splash cold water on your face, instead. The effect isn’t as profound, but it may still produce a similar effect.

Forgo the Nightcap

What you drink before you hit the sack also affects your mood in the morning.

Some people sip hard liquors before going to bed, assuming it gives them good quality sleep but the outcome is often the exact opposite. Sure, alcohol can help you fall asleep fast because it relaxes the muscles and slows down brain activity.

However, your body will continue to process the alcohol you consumed and create large volumes of urine to help get it out of your system. As a diuretic, it is difficult for the body to metabolize alcohol whether it is beer, wine, rum, and whatnot. One serving will take approximately an hour to metabolize.

After a few hours of sleep, you will find yourself waking up in the middle of the night needing to pee and it will be a challenge to go back to sleep. Alcohol also produces a negative effect on REM sleep.

Most Importantly, Get Enough Sleep Each Night

According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need seven to eight hours of sleep at night. Some of you may function with as little as five hours but getting less than the recommended hours on a regular basis has been linked to health problems, such as:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Diabetes
  • Impaired memory or brain function
  • Hypertension
  • Heart and stroke
  • Compromised immune system
  • Weight gain and obesity

Unfortunately, we simply can’t program ourselves to sleep on time and many of us find ourselves waking up in the middle of the night. While there are possible medical reasons why people have trouble falling and staying asleep, sometimes the problem lies in having the wrong bed.
