Having access to clean water makes everyone in your home happier and healthier.

Even though over 280 million Americans get their home from public water systems, knowing how to improve water quality isn’t always clear. Where you live and the condition of your home—whether you bought it recently or not—can all be factors.

Renovating Your Kitchen? Don’t Forget These Electrical Essentials

Fortunately, there are things you can do to make your water taste better. Here are 5 simple ways you can get started.

1. Have Your Water Tested

Getting your water quality tested is the best way to find out what needs to be fixed. It’s also a great way to find out why it tastes the way it does.

If you want to know how to measure water quality, you have a few options.

The best way to have it tested is to hire a professional. Look for a local water servicing company or buy a kit if nothing is in your area.

2. Purchase a Water Filtration System

Water filters (like Filter Smart)remove impurities, sediments, and unwanted minerals from your water supply.

Filtration systems come in a number of different options, too. For example, you can get an inexpensive sink attachment that filters it right before it pours into a glass.

If your only concern is drinking water from the tap, you might also consider a filtered water pitcher. This won’t solve the problem but will buy you time while you figure out how to improve water quality.

3. Flush the Pipes

Letting the water run on cold from the sink (or sinks) for several minutes can sometimes do the trick. Backed-up water that’s been sitting in your pipes can make it taste weird or look strange in a clear drinking glass.

Similarly, you might also try running other appliances around the house that use lots of water, like the bath or washing machine.

This might be all you need to do to improve sink water quality.

4. Aerate Your Faucets

When was the last time you had the faucets aerated? Sediment and minerals can build up inside, which end up in your water right as you pour.

Aerate Your Faucets

The good news is these are extremely affordable. You can usually find a low-flow aerator for less than ten dollars.

5. Look Into Water Delivery Systems

If you can’t find the solution or find that the fix is going to cost you lots in plumbing, a water delivery system might be a good workaround.

Having water delivered to your home is an investment. But you can use a tankless water heater to ensure that your family always has hot, clean water.

How to Improve Water Quality

There are several things to consider when it comes to how to improve water quality in your home.

Having your water tested and flushing the pipes are sometimes easy fixes. But in some cases, you may need to purchase a water filter system, aerate your faucets or look into getting it delivered.
