Mother-in-law’s Tongue

If you have just started accumulating plants for your home, mother-in-law’s tongue is a good starter plant for you. It is extremely low maintenance because it thrives even with neglect.

It requires a small amount of water and sunlight. Although it is known to be fond of sunlight, there is no need for you to keep it out often. You can place it near your window to get enough light. What makes it even more amazing to keep in your home is its ability to purify the air from harmful chemicals.

However, certain experts refute the air-purifying properties of plants, claiming that the research results are far from conclusive. But there are still reports maintaining that plants that are exposed to ample light improve their toxin-degrading abilities.

Succulents

These plants are one of the most in-demand plants among growers. It is a popular houseplant that has thick leaves and usually comes in miniature sizes. Succulents are easier to handle because of their ability to exist under any conditions.

While they need water from time to time, they can survive in a waterless extended period. The moisture stored in its body makes it withstand dry temperatures. Some people have taken it upon themselves to collect different varieties of succulents.

Two of the most popular succulents are the flaming katy (kalanchoe blossfeldiana) and the crown of thorns (euphorbia milii). Both produce beautiful flowers that could improve your house’s appearance. Add these two varieties if you wish to start your own succulents.

Lemon Butter Fern

Like some plants, lemon butter fern is a hardy plant because it can grow in any environment, whether a damp or dry one; it can thrive wonderfully. What makes it safe to keep inside your home is that it is non-toxic to your pets.

Devil’s Ivy

This plant is also known as golden pothos. It is known to also thrive in any environment and can live through a dry spell. You have to remember that it also needs water but not as often as other plants. It is low maintenance and can thrive even with little care.

You put them in hanging baskets or pots and place them as ornaments. Its vines can grow up to 40 feet long, but this depends on whether you use it as a houseplant or an outdoor plant.

Put them under the shade to slow down its growth. Pruning them often would help reduce their size. It is also known to strongly counteract pollutants in the air.

Lemongrass

Although known to be an ingredient for most Asian recipes, lemongrass is also a good addition to your indoor houseplants. Place this near windows and doors as it repels insects like mosquitoes.

It has a citrusy smell that is quite tolerable to people but emits a chemical called citronella that keeps mosquitoes away. This is a good alternative for citronella-laden candles that you use at home that sometimes contain harmful chemicals.

Mint

Another herb that deserves a space in your home. It can thrive indoors but needs ample sunlight and water to grow. Aside from the fact that you can easily use it for household purposes like cooking, its fragrance helps rejuvenate your energy. There are also claims that it can repel pests.

Spider Plant

This is a popular variety among homeowners/growers. This plant is also known as golden pothos. It can reportedly filter benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene, thus, earning NASA’s seal of approval on plants that help purify the air. It can grow quite abundantly and helps absorb harmful substances like mold and allergens.

This makes it perfect for those who are allergic to dust. Although ASPCA (American Society For the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals) has qualified spider plants as non-toxic to pets, it still has mild hallucinogenic properties that may affect your feline friends. So, keep it out of their reach.

Areca Palm

This plant is also a staple inside homes. It is listed as non-toxic, so it is quite safe to keep as a houseplant. However, this plant needs a larger space to grow because it can get from 6 to 10 feet in height.

You may opt to place this palm inside your bedroom since it can act as a natural humidifier.

This added feature is ideal for those who are suffering from sinus.

Takeaway

Plants are wonderful additions to one’s home. It is a delight to keep them around because of their ability to keep you grounded from the everyday hustle. You cannot also discount its added benefits. Make it a habit to grow plants. You may find this refreshing and may increase your productivity. Whether you maintain it indoors or outdoors, it is a nice and healthy feature for every home.
