Whether you live in Colorado Springs or New York City, wintertime can get very cold. Not only do you need to bundle up when you head outside, but you also need to make sure the inside of your home is toasty warm by using your furnace when it gets chilly.

While it would be lovely if furnaces always worked as they’re supposed to, this isn’t always the case. Issues can arise that can lead to furnaces not (or barely) working. As you could imagine, this can make things very uncomfortable during the winter. Without any further ado, let’s go over a few things you can do to keep your furnace in the best shape possible.

Get it Inspected Frequently

The key to a working furnace is frequent inspections. Without them, things can go wrong or the furnace may be inefficient, and you don’t even know it. So be sure to find a company that specializes in Furnace Repair in Colorado Springs, and they can help you make sure the furnace is working as it is supposed to.

You should have it inspected around once a year, and generally sometime before winter. The experts can diagnose any issues and fix them before the cold weather hits, or will be able to confidently tell you that your heating system is in great shape. Even if everything with your furnace seems fine, it is a good idea to get it checked out to make sure.

Change Out the Filter

Another important thing to do is to regularly change out the furnace filter. There are many different reasons for this that range from extending the life of your furnace, to keeping your energy costs as low as possible. While the filter itself is there to keep your furnace itself from getting full of dust and debris, the filter itself will also deal with these issues from time to time.

If you simply leave the furnace filthy, it will make it harder for the furnace to push out air as it will have to push past the dust, dirt and other debris that has coated the filter. Also, the air that is pushed out will not be fresh and clean air, reducing the air quality in your home.

As far as how often the filter should be changed, that can depend. It will depend on how often you run the furnace, the size of your home, how clean the air in your home is and even how large or thick the filter is. In general, every couple of months is a good plan, but if you see the filter is dirty, it is likely time to replace it.

Make Sure Vents and Registers are Clear

In order for your home to be heated effectively, the hot air needs to get from out of the ducts, through the vents and into your home. If these are blocked, it will be harder to do this, as the heat will be stopped or slowed before it reaches the rest of the room in an efficient manner.

Not only that, but blocking these vents makes the furnace work harder as it has to push out more hot air for your home to research the desired temperature, which can lead to higher costs. In general, you want to keep furniture from sitting on top of floor vents. Not only will it stop the home from being heated, but it could also damage the materials of the furniture in some cases.

Getting the Most Out of Your Furnace

These tips will help ensure you can get the most out of your furnace and that it keeps working for you all winter long. Issues can always arise, but following this advice should help keep them to a minimum.
