5 Interior Design Tips for Small Apartments
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Designing a small space can be a challenge. If you are a minimalist, it is probably less challenging, but if you are like most, the space you have is at a premium. Designing your space in a small apartment means that you need to rethink how you use your area and take advantage of some of the best small apartment ideas from top interior designers. You may also look for fully-furnished Huntsville apartments if you’re moving to Alabama, for example, and lessen the expenses of redesigning the place.

Utilising a small space means that you have to carefully think about what you like to do and how you like to spend your time. Your area has to function for you, your family, pets, hobbies, and possibly, work. Here are five interior design tips for small spaces that will get your ideas flowing.

Exploring the Versatility of Aluminum in Modern Design

  • Mount or Hide Your TV

One thing that is not at a premium is floor space. This means that you have to start thinking vertical when it comes to anything you can. One idea is to mount your TV on the wall using special brackets. Some of them swivel in many directions so you can adjust your television just the way you like it. Furniture is available that allows you to hide your TV, have extra storage space and shelving, and use the top for a work surface throughout the rest of the day.

  • Utilise Vertical Space

Think vertical where you can. You might want to consider shelving for plants and other items. Now, hangars are available that allow you to hang your plants on a beautiful macrame tapestry as a piece of wall art. While you are at it, you might want to replace that floor lamp or desk lamp with a pendant or hanging lamp. When it comes to your kitchen, you can find many ways to go vertical. The idea is to free as much counter space as possible. This will not only make it easier to work, but it will make the space look bigger, too. You might consider a wall-mounted magnetic knife holder or hanging bins for fruits and vegetables. A hanging pots and pans rack can help you keep everything neat and organised.

  • Use Neutral Tones

There are a variety of neutral interior paint colours to choose from that include beige, grey, ivory, taupe, and classic white that reflect the light and make the space look bigger. This does not mean that if you are a lover of colour you have to learn to do without. Neutral tones enhance a pop of colour and this can help make this space look larger, too. Don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour, but when it comes to small space interior design, lighter tones are your friend.

  • Customise Storage

A small space makes you rethink your relationship with the things you own. Whenever you think of bringing something new into your space, you have to think about where and how you will store it when it is not in use. It is also important to customise your storage space to meet your needs. This might mean repurposing traditional spaces, such as linen closets, to hold your favourite art supplies, movie collection, or camera equipment.

  • Use All Available Space

Having a small space also means embracing the multipurpose room. You need to think cleverly and think about things like an ottoman that doubles as storage space. You might also want to consider an old trunk that doubles as a coffee table. The idea is to think dual-purpose whenever possible. Maybe you need to consider a daybed that can double as a sofa during the day. If your home has a quirky architectural feature or a seemingly misplaced cubby hole, find a way to use it as a functional space or storage.

As you can see, small apartment design can be challenging, but it is not impossible. Now, you have a few ideas on how you can rethink your space and transform it into a cozy sanctuary. You could always hire an interior designer, but be prepared to spend between $100 to $300 per hour. Maybe it’s time to look around to see if there is any extra space you have been overlooking that could be put to better use.
