There are so many moving parts when it comes to moving to a new house that it can be overwhelming. When the move is a cross-country one then the stakes are much higher and the stress is off the charts. There are a lot of things that can go wrong and if you aren’t well prepared, then they will.

There are lots of things that have to be dealt with in advance and not left to chance when you are getting ready to move. Months before the moving day you should have a lot of things sorted out. In this article, we will go over some of the things that you need to prepare for ahead of time.

1 – Car shipping

Your best option to make the move is not to drive your car across the country. It may seem like you are saving money, but it is still costly and wastes a lot of time. In the time that you are spending driving, you could be using it to coordinate more parts of the move. In fact, you may need that time to set up the house for when your car and the movers arrive.

Take a look at some of the Montway reviews and you will see that it doesn’t cost as much to ship a car as you probably thought. When you add up the cost of the gas to drive such a far distance, plus the cost to stop for the night in a hotel, and even to eat you can see that it isn’t that much different than what you will pay to ship the car.

There is also the wear and tear on your car to consider along with the fact that it is dangerous to drive such long distances.

2 – Set up utilities

A few months before the move, you should look into transferring your electricity, gas, and internet to your new home. It is best to give yourself plenty of time for a couple of reasons.

The first is that the process can take some time. The accounts need to be changed and they will need a technician to turn on the access to your new house. This isn’t usually a quick process since it involves a lot of layers for the provider.

The second reason is that some providers won’t be operating in the area where you’re moving. You’ll need to cancel your account and sign up with the local providers. This can sometimes take a few weeks or months. It’s best to call long before that so you know it will be done when you move in.

3 – Downsize

Long before you make the move it is time to start getting rid of your stuff. It will be expensive to move things that are dead weight and you no longer use or need. Have a yard sale to get rid of a lot of stuff and give yourself some extra money for the move.
